Porcelain VeneersAn Overview

The secret to those amazing smiles!

Of all the cosmetic dental procedures available today for changing and improving the look of your smile, porcelain veneers are among the most popular and successful with our patients. Porcelain veneers are thin shells of porcelain custom fabricated to perfectly fit your teeth and blend with your appearance. The process involves removing a small amount of tooth structure to make room for the veneers, which are permanently attached to the teeth. Once the veneers are bonded to your teeth they are undetectable and you have the smile of your dreams.

Choosing the Right Cosmetic Dentist

When it comes to the integrity and durability of your results, choosing the right cosmetic dentist plays a key role. Cosmetic dentistry includes a range of treatments and procedures that are used to repair teeth or change their appearance, most involving the use of ceramic or composites that are adhered to the teeth. A highly trained and experienced dentist who takes a comprehensive approach can make the difference between a result that supports long-term oral health and one that breaks down over time.

Dr. Sousa evaluates all aspects of your teeth, gums and jaw joints to look for any signs of instability that could compromise results over time. A bad bite, malocclusion, TMJ dysfunction or other structural concerns can place stress on veneers and lead to damage. Addressing any underlying concerns as a part of your treatment plan means that your result will feel as good as it looks.

Porcelain Veneers What to Expect

The Smile Design process begins with a personal consultation, providing the opportunity for you to discuss your cosmetic goals and Dr. Sousa to evaluate your dental health. Determining your perfect look is done before any work is done using our Image Fx digital imaging software and diagnostic wax model previews fabricated in our laboratory. After previewing how your new smile will look, Dr. Sousa can create your custom porcelain veneers in our lab.

The porcelain veneers process produces minimal discomfort and involves a couple of visits for taking impressions and placing the veneers. Porcelain is a highly durable and stain resistant ceramic, offering a long term result that can be maintained with good oral hygiene and routine dental care.

Before & After

Porcelain Veneers FAQs

Am I a candidate for porcelain veneers?

Most patients will qualify for porcelain veneers. Ideally, a veneer candidate will have healthy teeth that are structurally sound, does not suffer from bruxism (teeth grinding), does not have gum disease, and takes very good care of their oral health.

Are porcelain veneers permanent?

Teeth veneers are considered a permanent dental restoration. It is important for patients to understand that once they choose porcelain veneers, they must be maintained for life. A thin lay of enamel is removed before the veneer is placed. Because of this, you cannot change your mind and simply have them removed.

Will dental veneers raise my risk of developing cavities or tooth decay?

No! Even though a thin layer of enamel is removed, the veneer will protect the tooth and prevent decay. However, this does not mean you can slack on oral hygiene routine. The development of cavities on neighboring teeth and gum disease can still compromise your results. Taking proper care of your teeth and veneers will ensure their longevity.
