Gum Disease

Do you Need Treatment for Bleeding Gums?

Our gums play an integral part in our overall health. Studies have shown a high correlation between gum disease and an increased risk of cardiovascular conditions. When plaque and tartar sit at the gumline, they can lead to gum disease. If you have bleeding gums in Roslyn Heights, NY, it could be an indication of a bigger dental problem. The sooner you see a dentist for an exam, the sooner you can get any treatment you may need. If caught early on, gum disease can often be treated with non-invasive procedures.

The Causes and Treatment for Bleeding Gums in Roslyn Heights, NY

There are a wide range of issues that could cause your gums to bleed. Gum disease is one of the most common reasons. But you could also suffer from bleeding gums if you have a piece of food stuck between your teeth or recently had a dental procedure. If you do notice your gums are bleeding, the first thing you should do is rinse your mouth with warm water and gently brush and floss. This can sometimes remove particles that could be causing irritation. If your gums continue to bleed regularly, it’s time to call your dentist.

Stages of Gum Disease

Bleeding gums is often an earlier sign of gum disease. If you notice your spit is pink or red after brushing your teeth, then it may be an indication of gum disease. At the early stage (gingivitis), gum disease is often treatable with minimal procedures. Your dentist may simply recommend an antibacterial mouth rinse or a deep cleaning to help clear up the disease.

However, if your gum disease progresses to the periodontitis stage, treatment is often more invasive. Your dentist may recommend scaling and root planing, a type of deep gum cleaning that can sometimes take multiple appointments. After you’ve had advanced gum disease, you’ll also need to maintain additional periodontal maintenance cleaning appointments throughout the year to prevent further damage.

In some cases, gum disease may even require oral surgery.

How to Prevent Bleeding Gums

Preventing gum disease is key to preserving your oral health. The best way to help keep your gums healthy is to brush and floss at least twice a day. You can also rinse your mouth out with water after meals and snacks to help reduce the number of food particles left behind. It’s also important to stay on top of your routine hygiene appointments. Regular professional cleanings can help reduce plaque buildup in your mouth and help prevent gum disease.
