Porcelain VeneersAn Overview

The secret to those amazing smiles!

Of all the cosmetic dental procedures available today for changing and improving the look of your smile, porcelain veneers are among the most popular and successful with our patients. Porcelain veneers are thin shells of porcelain custom fabricated to perfectly fit your teeth and blend with your appearance.

The process involves removing a small amount of tooth structure to make room for the veneers, which are permanently attached to the teeth. Once the veneers are bonded to your teeth they are undetectable and you have the smile of your dreams.

Choosing the Right Cosmetic Dentist

When it comes to the integrity and durability of your results, choosing the right cosmetic dentist plays a key role. Cosmetic dentistry includes a range of treatments and procedures that are used to repair teeth or change their appearance, most involving the use of ceramic or composites that are adhered to the teeth. A highly trained and experienced dentist who takes a comprehensive approach can make the difference between a result that supports long-term oral health and one that breaks down over time.

Dr. Sousa evaluates all aspects of your teeth, gums, and jaw joints to look for any signs of instability that could compromise results over time. A bad bite, malocclusion, TMJ dysfunction, or other structural concerns can place stress on veneers and lead to damage. Addressing any underlying concerns as a part of your treatment plan means that your result will feel as good as it looks.

Before & After

Porcelain Veneers FAQs

Am I a candidate for porcelain veneers?

Most patients will qualify for porcelain veneers. Ideally, a veneer candidate will have healthy teeth that are structurally sound, does not suffer from bruxism (teeth grinding), does not have gum disease, and take very good care of their oral health.

Are porcelain veneers permanent?

Teeth veneers are considered a permanent dental restoration. It is important for patients to understand that once they choose porcelain veneers, they must be maintained for life. A thin layer of enamel is removed before the veneer is placed. Because of this, you cannot change your mind and simply have them removed.

Will dental veneers raise my risk of developing cavities or tooth decay?

No! Even though a thin layer of enamel is removed, the veneer will protect the tooth and prevent decay. However, this does not mean you can slack on your oral hygiene routine. The development of cavities on neighboring teeth and gum disease can still compromise your results. Taking proper care of your teeth and veneers will ensure their longevity.

How long do porcelain veneers last?

Porcelain veneers can last between 10 and 15 years with proper care. Porcelain veneers are durable and stain resistant, but you will eventually need to replace or refit them due to normal wear and tear. Adopting good oral hygiene habits like brushing, flossing, and avoiding certain foods known to damage dental work can help maximize the lifespan of porcelain veneers.

Is it painful to get porcelain veneers?

Generally, getting porcelain veneers is not painful, but some patients may experience some level of discomfort. The level of pain or discomfort can vary from person to person. During the procedure, the dentist will administer a local anesthetic to make sure that the patient is comfortable. It is normal for patients to experience some minor discomfort once the anesthetic wears off. Depending on the overall condition of a person’s teeth, additional procedures may be necessary before applying veneers which could cause more discomfort or sensitivity in certain areas.

Do porcelain veneers look natural?

Yes. Porcelain veneers can give you a natural-looking smile. Porcelain mimics the translucency and color of natural tooth enamel, which contributes to its natural appearance. However, the final result also depends on factors such as the type of veneers, the color and shape of the existing teeth, and the experience of the dentist. It’s important to choose a good cosmetic dentist for your veneers to ensure a natural-looking result.
